International Waste Pickers Day 2024

International Waste Pickers Day 2024

Every March 1st, the world pauses to honor the tireless work of waste pickers—the unsung heroes who keep our cities clean and our recycling systems moving. In 2024, we collaborated with PET PRO and Human Dignity and Environmental Care Foundation (HUDEFO) to mark this day with concrete support for those at the frontline of recycling. PETPRO is an industry managed Producer Responsibility Organisation (PRO) practicing voluntary Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) in Tanzania while HUDEFO was born out of a shared belief that safeguarding our environment is not just about the planet; it’s about uplifting communities, empowering individuals, and creating a future where sustainability and human dignity coexist.

International Waste Pickers Day, observed annually on March 1st, serves as a poignant reminder of the critical role waste pickers play in sustainable development. The date holds historical significance, commemorating the tragic events in Colombia in 1992, where several waste pickers lost their lives. This day not only honors their memory but also amplifies global recognition of waste pickers’ contributions. The United Nations has acknowledged the essential role of waste pickers, stating, “Recyclers began to demand that society recognize, acknowledge and support their work.”- Human Development Report, 2016.

Under the banner of Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR), PET PRO has long championed the value chain for post‑consumer PET bottles. Recognizing that waste pickers play a critical role in this chain, we co‑organized a special event in Dar es Salaam to address two pressing needs: health insurance and personal protective equipment (PPE).

Through partnerships with local insurers, PET PRO facilitated CHF coverage for 50 waste pickers—ensuring access to essential medical services, from routine check‑ups to emergency care. Each of the 50 waste pickers received a full PPE kit, including gloves, masks, boots, and reflective vests—significantly reducing occupational health risks.

“Our goal is to continue reaching more needy waste pickers in the value chain who are doing an amazing job of taking care of the environment on behalf of producers in Tanzania. Together, we can make a positive impact on the environment and the lives of those who are working hard to protect it.”- Nicholaus Ambwene Nicholaus, Country Coordinator at PETpro Tanzania

Building on this successful collaboration, Juza Waste Pickers Initiative (JWPI) Waste Pickers Programs aim to transform lives—especially those of youth and women—through advocacy and policy development. Engaging governments, policymakers, and private stakeholders to formally recognize waste pickers as vital environmental stewards. We push for laws and regulations that guarantee fair wages, social protection, and safe working conditions. We deliver hands-on training in waste sorting, recycling best practices, and business skills.

Acting as a bridge between waste pickers, government agencies, NGOs, and private firms to foster cleaner, more sustainable cities. By integrating these elements, we not only uplift individual waste pickers but also strengthen the entire recycling ecosystem—driving environmental conservation and social justice hand in hand.

The celebration of International Waste Pickers Day 2024 serves as a clarion call to all stakeholders—governments, policymakers, private organizations, and citizens—to recognize and support the indispensable work of waste pickers. Investing in their health, safety, and rights is not just a moral imperative but a crucial step towards achieving sustainable waste management and environmental conservation.

As we reflect on the achievements of International Waste Pickers Day 2024, let us renew our commitment to empowering waste pickers. Support initiatives that provide health insurance, PPE, and fair compensation. Advocate for policies that protect their rights and acknowledge their contributions. We can build a future where waste pickers are valued, protected, and integral to our sustainable development goals.
